  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  • You should see small bubbles forming on top. This means the yeast is active.
  • Add the beaten egg, salt, sugar, vegetable oil, and yeast mixture into a large bowl. Mix well until combined.
  • Add flour one cup at a time. Stir well after each addition. Continue mixing until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a clean surface. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover it with a clean cloth.
  • Let it rise in a warm place for about 2 hours or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough to remove air. Knead briefly again.
  • Cut the dough into two equal pieces.
  • Let them rest for 10 minutes.
  • Shape each piece into a loaf about 14 inches long.
  • Place the shaped loaves onto greased cookie sheets. Cover them and let them rise for about 60 minutes.
  • Step 9: Slash the Top
  • Using a knife, make one long slash in the middle or three diagonal slashes across the top (optional).
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 22–25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Tap the bottom of the bread. If it sounds hollow, it is done.
  • Let the bread cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

Water should be warm, not hot. Hot water can kill the yeast.
If the dough feels sticky, add a little more flour (1 tablespoon at a time).
Rising time may vary depending on room temperature.
Always allow the bread to cool before slicing for best texture.
